Overview
Den is an iOS app operated by James Griffin Britt. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, when we share it, and the choices you have when you use Den.
Den is a faith-based app that includes phone-number login, scripture reading and tracking, AI reflection features, friend-based social features, notifications, and subscription-gated experiences.
Introduction
By using Den, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly, information collected automatically when you use the app, and information we receive from service providers that help us operate Den.
Information You Provide
When you use Den, you may provide your phone number and one-time passcode for account sign-in, your username, your chosen profile name inside the app, your timezone, and your profile photo.
You may also provide scripture notes, highlights, and reading-related activity you save, AI prompts and messages you send through AI Chat or Explore, social verse responses and chat messages, and support messages or emails you send to us.
If you allow contact access, Den reads contact names and phone numbers from your device to help you discover friends and invite people. Based on the current app implementation, normalized phone numbers are sent to our backend for matching. Contact names are used in the in-app experience and are not used for advertising.
Information Collected Automatically
When you use Den, we automatically collect certain information needed to operate the app, including your account ID, session information, push notification token, notification preferences, timezone, onboarding state, subscription and entitlement status, AI usage and access-control data, and internal audit, rate-limit, and security records.
Den also stores some information locally on your device, such as onboarding drafts, cached profile data, cached scripture notes and highlights, reading progress, and retry queues used to sync data reliably.
Device Permissions
Den may request access to notifications, contacts, and your photo library.
- Notifications are used to send daily verse reminders and social activity alerts.
- Contacts are used to help you find people you may know on Den.
- Photo library access is used to let you choose and upload a profile photo.
You can control these permissions at any time in your iPhone settings.
How We Use Information
We use information to create and secure your account, sign you in with phone-number verification, set up and maintain your profile, show scripture content, sync reading progress, notes, and highlights, power social features such as friend discovery, streaks, verse responses, and chat, send notifications and reminders you choose to receive, operate AI Chat and Explore, manage subscriptions, entitlements, paywalls, and purchase restoration, prevent abuse, enforce limits, maintain security, investigate issues, provide support, and comply with legal obligations.
Legal Bases for Processing
If you are in a location where a legal basis is required, we generally process your information based on performance of a contract when processing is needed to provide Den, consent when you grant permissions such as contacts, notifications, or photo access, legitimate interests such as operating, securing, improving, and supporting Den, and legal obligations when required by applicable law.
How We Share Information
We share information only as needed to operate Den and provide its features.
We may share information with service providers that help us run the app, with other Den users where sharing is part of the product experience, when you choose to use Apple or carrier features such as SMS sharing or in-app purchases, and if required by law or needed to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of Den.
If you use Den's social features, people you connect with may see information such as your username, avatar, streak participation, verse responses, and chat messages.
Your profile photo is currently stored in a way that allows it to be accessed through a public URL so it can be displayed in the app. Please only upload a photo you are comfortable sharing.
Third-Party Services
Den currently uses third-party services including Supabase for authentication, database, storage, and backend functions, OpenAI for AI Chat and Explore responses, API.Bible for scripture content delivered through our backend proxy, RevenueCat for subscription and entitlement management, Superwall for iOS paywall presentation, Expo for push notification token handling and push delivery, and Apple for iOS system permissions, SMS composer flows, and App Store billing.
These providers may process information on our behalf according to their own privacy and security terms.
Analytics, Tracking, and Advertising
Den currently uses limited first-party event tracking stored in our own backend, such as onboarding funnel events, to understand product flow and reliability.
Based on the current app implementation, Den does not use third-party advertising SDKs or cross-app advertising tracking in the iOS app. Den also does not use browser cookies inside the native app experience.
AI Features and User Content
If you use AI Chat or Explore, the content you send is processed through our backend and sent to OpenAI to generate a response. This may include your prompt, recent conversation context, scripture references, and scripture text used in the conversation.
Durable AI Chat history is stored in our backend and is automatically deleted after about 14 days under the current implementation. Explore sessions are shorter-lived and are cleaned up when they become stale.
Because AI features involve sending content to an AI provider, you should avoid submitting highly sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for your use of the feature.
Payments and Subscriptions
Den offers subscription-gated features.
On iOS, paywalls are presented through Superwall, subscription and entitlement handling is managed through RevenueCat, and payment processing is handled through Apple's App Store. Den processes subscription-related information such as entitlement status, expiration state, restore results, and related billing event metadata needed to keep your access in sync.
Den does not receive your full credit card number from Apple's in-app purchase flow.
Data Retention
We keep information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Den, maintain your account, operate features you use, protect the app, and comply with legal obligations.
Based on the current implementation, AI Chat history is retained for about 14 days, Bible proxy audit records are retained for about 30 days, friend-search audit records are retained for about 90 days, and some live Explore and social presence data is shorter-lived and cleaned up automatically. Certain read social message history may also be purged as part of the app's rolling social retention rules.
We may retain limited records for longer where needed for security, fraud prevention, billing reconciliation, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or enforcement of our terms.
Data Security
We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect your information. These include authenticated access controls, row-level database security, server-mediated handling for sensitive features, hashed phone lookup for contact matching, and restricted internal access to certain backend records.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access the personal information we hold about you, correct inaccurate information, delete your information, object to or limit certain processing, withdraw consent for permissions you granted, and request a copy of certain information.
You can also update your profile information inside the app, change notification settings in the app, manage iPhone permissions in system settings, and delete your account from the app.
Account Deletion and Data Deletion
Den includes an in-app account deletion flow.
If you delete your account, we will delete your authentication account and associated profile photo files, and we will generally delete or de-identify related account data tied to that account, subject to limited retention where needed for legal, security, billing, fraud-prevention, or operational reasons.
Children's Privacy
Den is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information through Den, please contact griffinbritt@denbible.com so we can review and delete it if appropriate.
International Data Transfers
Den uses service providers that may process information in countries other than your own. By using Den, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in locations where privacy laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction.
